Lantern is a kind of cultural icon for the Chinese. Red lantern symbolizes long life and good luck, and it's virtually a must-have decoration item during the Chinese New Year celebration.
The color of Chinese lantern signifies a specific meaning as well. While red lantern symbolizes good and happy occasion, the white lantern flanked at doorway announces that the family is in mourning
